Microsoft introduced a new licensing agreement in early 2007. This new licensing program labeled “Business Ready Licensing” is replacing the old “Module Based Licensing”. Organizations that have licensing Dynamics products under the old program can stay under the old program and the licensing terms of that program will apply for future product purchases but also have an option to change to the new licensing plan if they choose to. All organizations that purchase a Dynamics product for the first time will have to license under the “Business Ready Licensing” program.

The “Module Based Licensing” is based on a relatively low price per seat (lower than the current “Business Ready Licensing” but only limited functionality is included with each seat. Most of the functionality available needs to be licensed as additional modules. Dependent on the needs of an organization this could become rather expensive when extensive functionality was needed.

Under the new “Business Ready Licensing” program 2 base versions are available:

• Business Essentials • Advanced Management

Each of these versions comes with an extensive list of functionality included that in the earlier licensing module needed to be licensed separately. There are still a number of modules that can only be licensed by module. Not all of these modules are available for organizations that have licensed the Business Essentials edition.

Organizations that have previous licensed one of the Dynamics products are now faced with a decision once they need additional functionality:

• Remain with the “Module Based Licensing” program • Change over to the “Business Ready Licensing” program

The change to the “Business Ready Licensing” program requires an investment of $500 per licensed seat with a minimum of $10,000.

Dependent on the functional needs of the organization (now and in the future), what modules have been licensed in the past, and the number of users licensed it might or might not be cost effective for an organization that change to the new licensing program. The Microsoft partners have the information to provide you with an assessment if the change to the new “Business Ready Licensing” program is a good investment for your organization.
